Saturday, July 24, 2004 through Monday, July 26, 2004

This year’s Hook was primarily a light wind race so we stayed near the Wisconsin shore trying to pick up whatever breeze we could. As we went through Death's Door early Monday morning, we saw what we thought was a city just off to port. Then it moved! So we thought it was "just" a large ferry going from the Door to Washington Island. Then night turned into High Noon as "the city" shined its spotlight on us. FREIGHTER! We quickly altered course to Port as the freighter altered course to Starboard -- so far as to go around Plum Island on the wrong (but still safe) side. We were clear but the freighter reached the traffic buoy at about the same time as about a dozen Hook racers. Lots of horn honking and crash jibes but no damage. We finished at 15:13:38 in more than enough time to make the Mount Guy party. We took 4th Place in section, 21st in fleet
