This time we got an early start -- before 8 a.m. The campground owner even checked us on the way out to make sure we paid. We had arrived after they had closed (the campground hosts had waited on us). NOAA had predicted strong winds for Wednesday afternoon (30 to 50 knots from the west) and Craig wanted to reach Phoenix before the winds picked up (IRV does have NOAA weather radio.)
We made it to Phoenix by noon, picked up our rental car and checked into Val Vista Village by 12:15. We then went out; noticed that the car that we had rented smelled of cigarette smoke so we turned it in on another car. On the way back we went shopping for food and a table (there were no picnic tables at the site), and a wedding present. We also needed to do laundry so we stopped at a bank to cash a travelers check and get quarters. Spending 30 minutes at Washington Mutual trying to cash the check, Day persevered (they weren't sure how to cash a traveler's check?), got the quarters for the laundry and, we eventually returned to IRV. Day called N.M. to see if they were in town but they were still on I-40 in New Mexico. She then called Grace to say hello but she was out ferrying Mike's family from California. So, we relaxed.
