Craig & Day's 2007 Travels in IRV |
Tuesday, February 27, 2007 We stopped to tour Fort Davis on the way out. They had renovated several of the buildings and it was fun walking around the fort and seeing the scenery as the Calvary troops would have seen it in 1884 an upgrade of the original fort built in 1854. The big surprise was that there were no walls. They just positioned the fort up against the cliffs so that it was quite defensible. Off we went and once again we went off road and headed north saving 50 miles even though it was through mountains and narrow lanes, and across cattle guards. We even went by the McDonald observatory at around 6,000 feet and then straight back down. Not too bad, according to Day, except for the mile long bridge just below the observatory, she was on the cliff edge. Once we reached flat ground it was an easy drive back to I-10. Once again the country impressed us -- when we could see it through the trucks. Seems like every truck that could be found was leaving El Paso and heading for points north, east and west. We blew through New Mexico (not exactly as there was a strong headwind -- 20 knots from the west and uphill -- gas mileage sucked) with only one or two stops and spent the night just inside Arizona at Wilcox. On the way, we spent a lot of time watching trains counting cars and engines - more goods from El Paso?
