We woke up early but one of the couples last night suggested that everyone should take the six-mile hike to the Rio Grande (3 miles one way but you have to come back). Not being into walking and in somewhat of a hurry we got our mountain bikes down and rode off down the trail. It was easy enough getting there -- it was down hill the whole way. We took pictures of the Rio Grande, the cave where there was an 18' petroglyph of a panther created by the Indians thousands of years ago and the Seminole Canyon. Then we turned for home, rode uphill and died. We did meet another couple from Grand Rapids, Michigan at the Panther Cave overlook; she was from Evanston -- small world.
After arriving back at IRV and drinking a gallon of water, we decamped and headed west. On the way we had to stop at Judge Roy Bean's place. They still had his old courtroom and house and a museum comparing the legend to the realty. There was also a desert garden with an old wooden windmill (Many pictures).
We thought about sopping for the night at Fort Davis State Park but not before Day called the Park Ranger to be sure that the "mountain road" leading to the park was safe enough for Craig to drive on. She still has nightmares about various roads in the mountains (Estes Park, Apache Trail, Arizona, Blue Ridge Parkway, etc.) They assured her it was safe enough even with Craig driving. It was and we arrived safely and with a lot of help from our neighbor we backed into our site. We got the chairs out and enjoyed a beer (with coyotes yelping in the background) and decided to reposition IRV. Moving it worked better with just the two of us -- Craig driving and Day directing.
