After waving to everybody as we left, we were on the road at 08:53 (E. D. T.). We departed from our AAA planned route and drove down to Naples, where we were going to call on some friends who live in Punta Gorda. By the time we arrived and with the past day's experience in mind, we stopped to call campgrounds. They were all FULL!! However, the guy at the state park (turns out his wife works at Big Cypress) said to try the Monument and/or the Midway campgrounds in Big Cypress National Preserve for dry camping. We called and they had some spots but only on a first come basis. We hit the road immediately, not stopping in Punta Gorda, our apologies to Chris, Libby, Arnie and Sarah, and, with Day driving on the Tamiami Trail (two lane road), got to the park in time. We found a beautiful spot but it was dry camping -- no electrical, no water and no comforts (cold showers). The camp host was really helpful and radioed ahead to see if there were any spots left at the next campground (which had electrical and water hookups). There was one spot left but somebody else had also called so it was a race -- the first one to the campground wins. Craig decided that if he drove we would get there faster -- we did and we won.

Talking to our new neighbors, we found out that if we had stopped at the welcome center, Craig could buy a lifetime Senior Passport (formerly known as a Golden Age Passport) for $10 and save $9 on the camping fee. Away we went and we got the last Senior passport they had at the Welcome Center. What a day, we not only snagged the last spot in the campground, we saved $9.00.
